Bob was born 24 June 1935 in Charlotte, NC to Ernest C. Godfrey and Thelma Inez Gaither.
He graduated from high school then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 22 July 1952. His career as a Mustang Marine spanned over 28 years when he retired on 1 September 1980. He specialized in Motor Transportation and Logistics Coordination via land, air, and sea with the Navy, Army, and Air Force. His assignments covered the globe throughout the United States, Atlantic and Pacific theaters and specifically in Okinawa and Vietnam.
He is preceded in death by his Father, Ernest C. Godfrey, and Mother, Thelma Inez Gaither, and half-brother Patrick Godfrey.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Kolesnik Godfrey of Gulf Breeze; son, Scott Godfrey of Gulf Breeze; daughters, Lisa (Don) Phillips of Tallahassee, and Alison Godfrey (Steven Alejandro) of Kalispell, MT; granddaughters, Danielle (Stephen) Patterson of Niceville and Niki Phillips of Tallahassee; great granddaughter, Kit Darcy Patterson of Niceville; cousin, Molly (Bill) Ray of Leesburg, VA; and half-brother, Dr. Ernest (Rossie) C. Godfrey of Pinellas Park, FL.
Bob's hobbies were numerous including baseball/softball, volleyball, bowling, landscaping, and the humane treatment of all local animals. He volunteered for Boy Scout and Girl Scout activities and Little League baseball.
He was an active member of the Descendants of John Gaither Society, the Military Officer Association of America, and The Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels.
Bob was widely known and loved by friends and neighbors of the entire community. He cared for their well being and assisted in any task. His garage door was always open offering cold drinks for backdoor guest as he daily greeted passersby from his driveway observation post. He was an icon who will be dearly missed.
A memorial visitation will be held from 11:00 am until the memorial service begins at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A graveside will follow at 1:00 pm at Barrancas National Cemetery
