2018 Reunion & Annual Meeting Introduction

35th Reunion and Annual Meeting - Annapolis, Maryland

June 14 - 17, 2018

For the 35th Reunion, the family will return to Annapolis, Maryland, the city where the Society of John Gaither Descendants was formed in 1984 and to where John Gater fled in 1649 to escape the religious intolerance of Virginia.  The John Gaither family, along with 200 other Puritan families moved north on the Chesapeake Bay and formed what was first called Providence on the North Shore of the Severn River.  In this year's Reunion, you will not only walk the streets of one of the most historic cities in America, but you will also visit Abington, the Gaither family homestead.

Annapolis served as the nation's first peacetime capital. Maryland's four signers of the Declaration of Independence had homes here, which are a few minutes' walk from each other and can still be visited and enjoyed today. A walk down the brick-lined streets puts you in touch with four centuries of history and architecture, with more 18th-century brick homes than any other city in the nation. Visit buildings once frequented by Jefferson and Washington, or the exact spot the Treaty of Paris was ratified. Or stop by the Maryland State House – the oldest in continuous use – for a peek into the room where George Washington resigned his military commission to the Continental Congress.  For more historic sites to visit in Annapolis , click here.

In addition to the history, Annapolis has a plethora of things to see, do, and enjoy.  The United States Naval Academy, established in 1845, and its traditions are synonymous with the city of Annapolis.  From historic inns to art galleries, pubs, restaurants, and boats, the City Dock area has something for everyone.
