Ida Mae Claiborne, 89, of Joplin, Missouri formerly of Baxter Springs, Kansas, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2015, at Joplin National Health Care. She was born January 18, 1926, in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma, to William Baker and Lura (Coursey) Gaither. She was united in marriage to Dr. Richard Henry Claiborne III, on June 11, 1949, in Coffeyville, Kansas.

After graduating from the University of Kansas, Ida taught school for many years. After retiring from teaching, she worked for the former Kent's Flowers in Baxter Springs. Ida enjoyed all craft work, such as painting and sewing. She also loved spending time traveling with Richard. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Baxter Springs. Ida was a long time member of the Society of John Gaither Descendants
Ida is preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by one daughter, Daria Claiborne, of Joplin, Missouri; two sons, Dr. Richard Claiborne and wife, Teresa, of Wichita, Kansas, and Dr. Ronald Claiborne, of Kansas City, Kansas; five grandchildren, Cecilia Compton-Arber, Dr. Richard Claiborne, Rodney Claiborne, Heather Compton, and Anna Claiborne.
